Booking choice: The small-group northern lights night. Check dates Tour details
Lofoten sits between 68 and 69 degrees north, far enough above the Arctic Circle for a real polar night, and mild enough that the harbours rarely freeze. Winter here is wet, windy and dark in December, then bright and snowy by March.
This post gives the 2026-27 dates for Svolvær and Reine, the light you can plan a day around, what tours run, and how to handle the one road that links it all.
The quick answer
In Svolvær the sun stays below the horizon from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027; in Reine from 10 December to 2 January. Even at the darkest you get about five hours of usable twilight, roughly 09:25 to 14:35. Aurora season runs from late August to mid April by Visit Lofoten's count. The Trollfjord cruise pauses from November to January, while RIB eagle safaris, aurora tours and the day tour to Reine keep going.
When is the polar night in Lofoten in 2026-27?
Svolvær has no sunrise from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027. Reine, further south and west, is shorter: 10 December to 2 January.
The dates come from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute's sunrise service (met.no), which returns no sunrise for Svolvær on 7 December and a 42-minute day on 6 December, from 11:31 to 12:13. For Reine the first sunrise of 2027 is on 3 January, at 11:51, with sunset at 12:32 (met.no).
Those times assume a flat horizon. Lofoten has none. With the sun a degree or less above the sea, any peak to the south hides it, so in Reine and Hamnøy you will not see the disc for days either side of these dates. Visit Norway calls the dark period mørketid and puts it at five to six weeks from early December. Some sources stretch it further. That is a definition choice, not a different sky.
| Place | Last sunrise | No sunrise | First sunrise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Svolvær | 6 Dec 2026 (11:31 to 12:13) | 7 Dec 2026 to 5 Jan 2027 | 6 Jan 2027 |
| Reine | 9 Dec 2026 (about 11:42 to 12:18) | 10 Dec 2026 to 2 Jan 2027 | 3 Jan 2027 (11:51 to 12:32) |
How much daylight is there in a Lofoten winter?
Less than you would like and more than you fear: about five hours of twilight at the solstice, almost six hours of sun by 1 February, and nearly ten by 1 March.
Polar night is not pitch black. On 21 December the sun reaches 1.7 degrees below the horizon at noon in Svolvær (met.no), which is enough for a long blue dawn that runs straight into dusk. On a clear day the snow and the sea pick it up. On a grey day it feels like late evening by 13:00.
The table shows the sun times and the civil twilight window (the sun less than 6 degrees below the horizon, enough to see without a torch) for Svolvær. Sunrise and sunset match met.no; we calculated the twilight with standard solar formulas, so allow a minute or two. Reine keeps its light about ten minutes longer in the afternoon.
Plan driving inside the light. A Svolvær to Reine run is about two hours each way without stops, which uses the whole December window.
| Date (Svolvær) | Sunrise / sunset | Usable light (civil twilight) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov 2026 | 08:15 / 15:16 | 07:09 to 16:21 |
| 15 Nov 2026 | 09:18 / 14:14 | 07:58 to 15:35 |
| 6 Dec 2026 | 11:31 / 12:13 (last sunrise) | 09:02 to 14:44 |
| 21 Dec 2026 | No sunrise | 09:25 to 14:36 |
| 6 Jan 2027 | About 11:44 / 12:32 (first sunrise) | 09:16 to 15:00 |
| 1 Feb 2027 | 09:24 / 15:09 | 08:10 to 16:23 |
| 1 Mar 2027 | 07:24 / 17:07 | 06:27 to 18:04 |

When is the northern lights season in Lofoten?
Visit Lofoten says the lights show from late August to mid April; Visit Norway says September to March. Either way, December to February has the most dark hours.
The two tourist boards disagree on the edges. Visit Lofoten writes that the lights are "first visible in late August, and slowly fade away in the spring sky in mid April". Visit Norway says the sky is too bright by 1 April. Book for September to March and you are inside both.
Lofoten sits under the auroral oval, and Visit Lofoten notes that a Kp of only 2 to 3 can put the aurora overhead. The usual window is from about 20:00 or 21:00 to just after midnight. On the solar side, NASA and NOAA announced the solar maximum period in October 2024, and strong storms still happen in the declining phase.
The real limit is cloud. The coast catches weather off the Norwegian Sea, and clear gaps move. That is why a guide with a car beats a fixed viewpoint: the small-group northern lights night picks up from Svolvær hotels and drives to the clearest sky. Nobody can promise the aurora on a given night, so give yourself three or more evenings.

Hotel pickup in Svolvær, eight guests at most, a fire when the weather allows, and your photos sent by link afterwards.

Aurora tours, RIB eagle safaris, fishing trips and the day tour to Reine and Å keep running. The silent Trollfjord cruise takes a break from November to January.
Read the season line before you build a trip around one boat. Brim Explorer lists the silent Trollfjord cruise for 1 February to 31 October, with departures at 09:00 and 13:30 outside summer. In December and January the quick way into the Trollfjord is the RIB sea eagle safari: Visit Lofoten lists eagle safaris from Svolvær year-round, and the operator lends you an insulated suit.
Guide to Lofoten runs the day tour to Reine and Å all year, with a winter pickup at 08:30 in Svolvær so the drive west lands in the light. Indoors, the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg opens Wednesdays and Saturdays, 11:00 to 17:00, from 1 November to 31 December 2026 (Museum Nord).

Check dates for the RIB sea eagle safariWhat is driving the E10 like in winter?
Ploughed and usable, but icy, dark and exposed to wind. Bridges can close for hours, and there is no other road.
Studded tyres are allowed in Nordland from 16 October to 30 April, and winter tread must be at least 3 mm whatever tyre you have (Statens vegvesen). Check what your rental car has before you leave the airport. Visit Lofoten's winter advice is blunt: stop only in lay-bys, "never on the E10 itself", and stay off unploughed side roads.
The E10 is the only link between the islands. In strong wind the Gimsøystraumen and Raftsundet bridges can shut, and you wait. West of Leknes there is a second bottleneck this winter: the Nappstraum tunnel closes every night until December 2027, with one escorted passage. Our post on the Nappstraum tunnel closures has the exact times, and they matter if you land at Leknes late or come off the Moskenes ferry.
Not keen on driving in the dark? Base yourself in Svolvær and let a guide drive. That is the main reason the winter tours start there.

What is the best part of winter 2026-27 for a Lofoten trip?
Late February to March: long nights for the aurora, real daylight for driving, snow on the peaks and the cod season in full swing.
December is for people who want the polar night itself, with the blue midday and the Christmas markets. It also means short driving days and no Trollfjord cruise. From February the light comes back fast: almost six hours of sun on 1 February and nearly ten by 1 March in Svolvær. The cruise boats are back, the stockfish racks fill up, and the World Cod Fishing Championship comes to Svolvær in March.
Our guide to the best time to visit Lofoten compares every month, and the skrei season post covers the cod side of late winter.
