Go2Lofoten · Svolvær
A traditional fishing boat takes you out from Svolvær for four hours with rods, rain gear and a crew who show you how to jig for cod, pollock and haddock. Pick it because you keep what you catch: the crew guts and fillets it and helps you pack it to take away.

Lofoten has lived off cod for more than a thousand years, and this is the easy way to try it. You meet at Go2Lofoten's office on Sjømannsgata, 15 minutes before departure, and board a traditional fishing boat in the harbour. The crew hands out rods, rain gear and life jackets, explains the technique and the safety rules, and takes you out to where the fish are.
The listing names cod, pollock and haddock. Go2Lofoten's own page adds mackerel in season and the odd halibut, ling or flounder. Coffee, biscuits and a non-alcoholic hot toddy are served on board, and on the way back you feed the seabirds. The crew guts and fillets on request and helps you pack the catch, which is great if you have a kitchen in your rorbu and useless if you're in a hotel.
It isn't suitable for anyone with limited mobility: you're on a working deck that moves. If you get seasick, the operator suggests a tablet an hour before you sail. From Reine, the drive to Svolvær is two hours each way, and that's a long day for a fish dinner.
