Raido Adventures · Svolvær

A small-group northern lights night

Raido Adventures picks up eight guests at most from Svolvær hotels and drives to wherever the forecast shows the clearest sky, with a guide who doubles as photographer. Pick it for the small group and the extras: warm food, a bonfire when the weather allows and a tripod and camera to use if you don't bring your own.

Small-Group Northern Lights Night

About this experience

This is a chase, not a show. The guide reads the cloud and aurora forecasts, picks a direction and drives the minivan away from Svolvær's lights to a beach, a viewpoint or a quiet bay. Lofoten sits under the auroral oval, and Visit Lofoten notes that lights can show even when activity is low, so clear sky is what counts. Nobody can promise it, and the listing doesn't: the aurora is never guaranteed.

What you get for your money either way: a five-hour night, warm drinks and food, a bonfire if the wind allows, and a guide who teaches you camera settings or shoots for you with the tripod and camera supplied. Photos arrive by link within 72 hours. Pickup runs from Thon Hotel Svolvær, Thon Hotel Lofoten, Scandic Svolvær, Svinøya and Torget, the square.

The season is the catch. A reseller listing for the same tour gives 17 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, inside the wider window Visit Lofoten quotes (late August to mid April). If you're sleeping in Reine, a Svolvær night tour is hard work: two hours each way, plus the Nappstraum tunnel, which closes at night during roadworks. Look for a tour at your own end of the islands.

Tips before you book

  • Book it for your first clear-looking night, not your last. If the weather cancels, you still have time for a second try.
  • Wear more than you think. Visit Norway gives winter temperatures of about -5°C to 3°C, but standing still on a beach in wind feels colder.
  • Bring a power bank: phone batteries drain fast in the cold.
  • The listing promises a full refund if the weather cancels. A cloudy but running night isn't a cancellation.

Frequently asked questions

Are the northern lights guaranteed?

No, and no honest operator says otherwise. The guide drives to the clearest sky available, but cloud or a quiet sun can still leave you with nothing. The listing refunds you if the weather cancels the trip.

When is northern lights season in Lofoten?

Visit Lofoten says late August to mid April; Visit Norway says September to March. This tour's season, per a reseller listing, runs from mid October 2026 to the end of March 2027. See our best time to visit guide.

Do I need a camera?

No. The guide brings a tripod and camera, takes photos of the group and sends them by link within 72 hours. Bring your own if you want to learn the settings.

Where is the pickup?

Thon Hotel Svolvær, Thon Hotel Lofoten, Scandic Svolvær, Svinøya or Torget in central Svolvær. Confirm your spot with the operator after booking.
